For some reasons, people tend to choose rice than tubers. Of course it is personal choice, but maybe tubers is just like an old-fashion food for some people or maybe because rice has been the main source of carbohydrate they usually serve on dinner table. The truth is, tubers also contain of carbohydrate which even have healthier fibers than rice. Cassava and sweet potatoes are the examples.

Based on the approved data in 2009, Indonesia – a country with a huge consumers of tubers – reached 51,7% in average from total of tubers consumptions. On the other hand, rice reached the consumptions level of 118,5% learning that the rice is more popular than tubers.

With this wide gap between tubers and rice consumptions, Indonesians have unbalanced nutrient intake. The data also shows that the consumptions of other fiber sources like fruits and vegetables were also low. It only reached poorly 96,7% from what had been recommended.

People should comprehend that rice contains of massive energy and its fiber are low. Meanwhile, tubers prove to be healthier because they come with high fibers. If people who consume rice with massive energy or calorie don’t balance the body condition by doing exercises or other physical activities, it may affect the body. The deposited calorie may trigger obesity or sugar content increase in the blood.

Furthermore, the lack of fibers consumption may cause many problems to the digestive system and this may bring digestive problems like dropsy or even cancer. This is essential information to know that lack of fibers may raise the risk of getting intestine cancers, as reported by many researches.

The source of fibers from tubers are many, they are cassava, taro, yam, and so forth. People can actually grow these tubers on the backyard because they are easy to plant as well as to grow. Another option is of course by purchasing them from nearby market, both traditional and supermarket.

Other foods which have been consumed massively by many Indonesian are oil and fat that the consumption level reaches 114%. This over-consumption level may lead to the increase of bad cholesterol and cardiovascular illnesses if they don’t control the consumption.

The animalistic foods and nut consumption need to be carried out into higher level because the data shows they are low consumed. More focus should be applied because those foods are rich source of protein which helps the new cell and height growth.
