Delicious Tapioca Local Recipe to Accompany You Share Tea Time with Family PDF Print E-mail

Back to the old age, it was exactly in World War II period that people in Malaya had tapioca as a staple diet. As a result, even though tapioca has no longer become the main staple diet, tapioca is still the favorite snack for tea time for many families in Malay.

There are several ways people in Malay choose to eat this tapioca snack, they can just steam it and eat it after dipping it into plain sugar, or dipping it into honey. Today, you can find many tapioca-based snacks on markets that are usually in the form of yellow-tint cake.

Actually, the yellow-tint cake or Golden Tapioca Parcel is different from the cake you know because it is more to a local recipe. The cake is easy to make and it is also delicious. Well, you can try it at home and have a good time with your family. Thus, here are the ingredients you should prepare to make this delicious Golden Tapioca Parcels.

  • Yellow-fleshed tapioca, grated  500 grams
  • Sugar     5 – 7 tsp
  • Water or coconut milk
  • Banana leaves in A4 size

After preparing the ingredients, you can start cooking the recipe with some steps below.

  • First of all, steam the banana leaves for approximately 1 minute or you can check that the leaves will be ready when you can fold it without breaking. After the leaves are well-heated, let it to cool down.
  • Secondly, pour the finely grated tapioca into a mixing bowl and add sugar and mix them together carefully.
  • While mixing, pour some water or coconut milk, and mix them again. Afterward, knead the tapioca until dough is formed so you can shape it. Be careful not to add too much water because the dough may become runny so it will be difficult to shape.
  • Take the banana leaf you have let it to cool before and place it on the table. Add 2 tbsp of the tapioca mixture on the leaf right at the center spot and flatten the dough. Fold the banana leaf over the mixture into a parcel. Do the same steps until the dough is all used.
  • Then, boil water in a steamer and after it boils place all tapioca parcels inside it and steam them for about 25 minutes. When the steaming process is done, let the tapioca parcels inside the steamer for about 10 minutes. When the time is up, take the tapioca parcels out from the steamer and serve it.

If in certain case you cannot prepare the banana leaves, you can use a baking tin to steam the banana mixture.
